Sleep Your Way to a Healthy Baby

In an age where sleep deprivation is a badge of honor for getting things accomplished in life, this is title may be counterintuitive. When it comes to the project of creating healthy pregnancies and children, getting enough quality sleep is crucial.

Sleep affects the production of hormones like melatonin and cortisol, which in turn influence reproductive hormones. Poor sleep can lead to irregular menstrual cycles and reduced sperm quality.

Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night, and create a bedtime routine to help your body wind down. How do you know how much you are sleeping and the quality of the sleep? I love tracking my sleep with my Oura Ring. I was shocked when I first started tracking how much sleep I actually get! If you would asked me how much sleep I get a night, I would say on average 7-8 hours. But the ring tells another story.

What are other factors to consider when upgrading the quality and quantity of your sleep?

  1. Avoid screens an hour before bed to reduce blue light exposure, which can interfere with melatonin production.

  2. Consider using a sleep tracker to monitor your sleep patterns and identify areas for improvement. Prioritizing sleep can help optimize your fertility and overall health.

  3. Keep your bedroom cool and dark to maximize the quality of your sleep. Cover any forms of light that could interfere with your circadian rhythms.
